Our State's Story: Wisconsin First Nations

Our State's Story: Wisconsin First Nations

Presented by St. Croix River Association at Horst Rechelbacher Farm

Join David O’Connor (Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa) American Indian Studies Consultant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for an evening to learn about the history, culture and tribal sovereignty of Wisconsin’s American Indian nation and tribal communities. Topics to be explored include Wisconsin First Nation’s histories, treaties, sovereignty, languages, and cultures.

This presentation is an opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the issues related to the history of American Indian nations and tribal communities of Wisconsin. Furthermore, participants will examine why it is important to generate a deeper and more complex understanding of human diversity issues and concerns, particularly in regards to American Indian peoples, in a society that is continually changing. There will be time for Q & A.

The event is one of many in 2018 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, which became a national park with the passage of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act in 1968. Thanks to federal protections, the Riverway — which includes the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers — still offers clean water, breathtaking beauty, and abundant recreation.
