Intro to Boro Fabrics

Boro –a Japanese word meaning “broken:  an aesthetic that is based on fabric or garments that have been heavily used, tattered, and repaired using various darning techniques.

Boro cloth lends itself to several trending movements such as sustainability (upcycle, recycle, circular design); visible mending (sashiko stitching, slow stitching) and mindfulness, as people have become interested in more sustainable fashion and clothing.  Learn the History of Boro, the difference between sashiko and running stitch, embroidery floss and sashiko thread, fabric collage and practice stitching. Utilize vintage Japanese fabrics to patch and collage. We will create your own Boro piece approx. 8”-10” and leave with and an understanding of how to repurpose that special piece of fabric or repair or embellish a beloved piece of clothing.
