    The Belwin Conservancy and our members are working together to protect the St. Croix Valley through land conservation, scientifically-based ecological restoration and by building connections between people and the natural world. The Belwin Conservancy’s 1,364 acre preserve includes oak savanna and woodlands, tallgrass prairie, wetlands, and fens. It is home to numerous rare and threatened plants and animals. The Belwin Conservancy is a nonprofit organization and needs your help to continue working to protect the landscape and wildlife of this area.

    The Brown’s Creek Watershed District (BCWD) is a special-purpose, local unit of government established in 1997 to prevent flooding and protect lakes and streams throughout the Brown’s Creek watershed. The district covers 30 square miles of land, including portions of Grant, Hugo, Lake Elmo, May Twp., Oak Park Heights, Stillwater and Stillwater Township. In addition to completing dozens of flood-prevention and water-improvement projects over the years, BCWD implements rules to guide new development. The watershed drains to Brown’s Creek, a designated trout stream, which flows to the St. Croix River.

    Carpenter Nature Center is located in the St. Croix Valley on 725 acres of protected and restored natural habitat. The Nature Center is open to the public, 361 days a year from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for learning about nature. The nature center provides K-12 environmental education curriculum to 7,000 visiting school children on an annual basis. Public programs and events are attended by thousands more visitors. Admission to the site is free and the admission fee for programs is kept as low as possible to ensure accessibility. Carpenter Nature Center is also home to the Junior Girl Scout Nature Bench, which is part of the Art Bench Trail located in the St. Croix Valley.

    The Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center, located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers, is one of more than 60 Interpretive Centers located along the 2,500 mile Mississippi River. Programs include nature, history, changing art exhibits, Junior Ranger programs and more. Most programs are free and open to the public. The GRRLVC also offers schools an in classroom, curriculum based Traveling Naturalist program for grades 3 and 4, and outdoor programs for preschool- grade 6. Freedom Park is also home to the Butterfly Bench, part of the Art Bench Trail through the St. Croix Valley.

    WI Interstate Park is known worldwide for its glacial potholes.  It’s also one end of the 1,200 mile National Ice Age Trail.  It offers beautiful views from bluffs along the St. Croix River, swimming/ fishing/ canoeing at Lake O’ the Dalles, family nature programs, and has over 9 miles worth of hiking trails (as well as ski & snowshoe in the winter).  A Visitor Center provides an auditorium, exhibits and a gift shop.

    The Lee and Rose Warner Nature Center is located 30 miles northeast of St. Paul, Minnesota near historic Marine on St. Croix. The oldest private nature center in Minnesota, Warner features over 600 acres of undeveloped woodland, marsh, lake, bog and grasslands. Within the Trailside Museum, visitors can learn about our public natural history programs, learn how to become a volunteer or Friend of Warner, and experience the Hidden Wonders of Warner, our brand-new interactive, hands-on education exhibits.

The idea for Sustainable Stillwater kicked off in May 2013 with a community-wide visioning session led by high school students with a passion for a greener community. In June 2016 Sustainable Stillwater MN was officially introduced publicly. Since then, our management team has launched sustainability initiatives in Stillwater, such as the downtown business waste management program S.E.E.D., promotion of energy management for carbon reduction, Safe Routes to School,  and the adoption by Stillwater of the GreenStep Cities plan.  On March 4, 2019, SSMN became a 501c3 nonprofit charitable organization.
