Welcome to Afton, a charming, nineteenth century village on the banks of the beautiful St. Croix River. The historic village of Afton is nestled between wooded river bluffs and the scenic, protected St. Croix River. Some call Afton “nostalgic, friendly and quaint.” Visitors in the mid-1800s were reminded of Robert Burns’ poem “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton,” and thence came it’s name. The historic main street of Afton (St. Croix Trail) features several unique shops that sell clothing, antiques, jewelry, plants, hand-made gift items and more. This downtown area also includes a lovely, 18th Century hotel, several restaurants with lush outdoor dining areas, a popular wine bar and Minnesota’s oldest ice cream parlour. Wild flowers, deer, flying geese and songbirds thrive in the surrounding areas, along with wild berry bushes left over from Afton’s early berry industry. The scenic valley and hills offer plenty of activities for visitors including skiing, boating, golfing, apple picking, fishing and hiking. Twenty minutes from St. Paul, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the small town of Afton is bursting with charm and things to do. Plan you visit to Afton today.
