Always held on Mothers’ Day weekend, the opportunity to visit pottery studios, to enjoy a short springtime drive in the country, and to meet outstanding potters from around the nation has become an annual outing for many.
In 1993 seven pottery makers living in the St. Croix River valley decided to establish an annual tour of their pottery studios. Twenty-seven years later this pottery tour and sale has grown to be nationally recognized as a gathering of exceptional potters offering an intriguing array of distinctive, handmade ceramics.
The 2020 St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 8, 9, 10. It will include seven pottery studios, fifty-five guest potters from around the nation, and this year, two from England. The seven pottery studios are located in the upper St. Croix River valley, in Chisago County, less than a one-hour drive from Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Visitors often comment on the “open house” hospitality of the host potters. The guest potters often comment on the knowledgeable and appreciative audience here in Minnesota.
Admission to all the studios is free and open to everyone. “The Tour” is a self-supporting arts event and each year a portion of the proceeds is donated to local, regional, or national arts and educational projects.
